A woman can wear a suit and look stylish. That’s my motto anyway. I love a woman in a suit.
Women and suits have a long, curious history, taking in the suffragette suit and the zoot suit. The two-piece is getting a gorgeous item of clothing to wear and most certainly timeless.
To talk about a woman’s clothes in a public arena may feel inherently problematic, but there is a visual language to politics, whether we like it or not.
It is not so much that the clothes matter, but that they are part of the conversation and can be symbolic. A suit is a way to shield oneself from public scrutiny, or, as Gabriela Hearst put it, “one less thing for women to have to think about when getting dressed”.
As you know I love a sparkle – so there is most certainly a shine in my suit to symbolise Christmas 2018.
Carnaby Street, London
Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. Everybody is up for having a celebration, the streets of London turn even prettier with the Christmas lights and despite clients nagging you with a gazillion things do’s (as if the world is ending), I am generally in a happier mood.
These photos where taken on Carnaby Street, London for Bohemian Rhapsody ! I have actually written a blog post about this movie where you can find here.
Carnaby Street is one of my favourite streets in the city (I must have walked up and down this street a million times over the years) and that is not even a joke!
London’s Carnaby Street was transformed into a Bohemian Rhapsody tribute as lyrics from the song were lit up in the historical Soho spot.
A company called Crown Love sent me over their Alice Brand and I knew this was the perfect accessory for this type of look. I am wearing the Velvet Royal Faux Pearl Alice Band and this simple hair accessory completes the whole of this look.
Jewellery – Coke can hoop Earrings
I have teamed this look up with big hoop silver earrings to add femininity. The hoop – an earring classic worn by everyone from Sade and Clara Bow to Victoria Beckham and Georges Bizet’s Carmen – is back! They vary in drop – earring speak for the distance between the bottom of your lobe and the end of the earring – from discreet mini hoops to gigantic shoulder-grazers. But before embracing the trend, take a breath. Like a red lipstick or a pair of jeans, hoop choice is a personal thing: it takes time and patience. I love a big hoop like I am wearing as they are statement piece of jewellery and I am not wearing any other piece of jewellery. I am wearing the Coke Can hoop earrings which are big but not huge, these look great with a suit. Think impact without effort.
I have glossy makeup but the main factor is the red lipstick. If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, red lipstick is her fearless ally.
Red lipstick has had a surprisingly tumultuous history. It may be one of the most powerful symbols of female beauty and sexuality in the Western world, but the power it wields has caused red lip colon to be regulated and condemned on numerous occasions for “deceiving men” and “undermining class divides.” And while lipstick ingredients have varied wildly throughout time, one thing remains consistent: women are willing to put almost anything on their lips for the allure of a perfect scarlet pout, even if means exposure to toxic materials and risking arrest or social exile.
I wanted to wear a colour that was bold and really stood out as the suit is black – for me there was no better option than red!
This bag along with this whole outfit was purchased from Zara. I love it because it is simple and the main focus is on the suit.
These heels are super cute and stylish. I absolutely love the clear strap and the mid heel. That innocence? Girl we can see right through it. Especially in those clear heels! Perfect that strut because the perspex trend is stickin’ around. Let’s be clear, it’s time to put your best foot forward and bring a minimal vibe to your look. This is so important because all of the emphasis is on the suit! Get tied up with lace up clear heels, or step up your style game in cute courts and peep toe perspex styles. Your shoedrobe never slayed as much. Don’t be basic. Style your clear high heels with a suit like I am wearing for a night out, or with co-ords for that special occasion pencilled in the diary. It’s time to give your shoedrobe some clarity!
You can’t go wrong wearing a suit! It is not a man’s world it is most certainly a woman’s.
